What is solution focused hypnotherapy?
Solution focused hypnotherapy is a practical modern therapy, that uses effective interventions. The focus is on the present and future and not on the past, allowing you to come up with solutions which can be worked towards.
Solution focused therapy looks at the positive future that you want to achieve rather than focusing on issues or problems that have occurred in your life. The type of psychotherapy I practice does not involve you analysing painful memories, rather we acknowledge any painful events that have happened, then help you to move from where you are to where you want to be.
It is important to understand that you have to apply some effort to bring about change, hypnotherapy is not something that is done to you.
What happens during a hypnotherapy session?
We start with an initial consultation. This gives you a chance to meet me and ensures you get a full explanation of the process. It also gives me a chance to ask you about your expectations and get a detailed picture to work with. The initial consultation lasts about 50 minutes and whilst there is no trance you’ll leave with a greater understanding of ‘why we do the things we do’, an appointment for the next week and a link to my download to support you.
A standard session will generally start with me asking ‘What’s been good about your week?’ and talking to you about the concrete positive changes you are already making. This means you’re creating new positive habits and re-framing your experience of daily life.
I practice a ‘Solution Focused’ approach so whilst we acknowledge the past and learn from it we are more concerned with helping you move towards your goals. I help you to build upon your resources and to move forward at your own pace and in a safe and non judgemental space. Many people believe that hypnotherapy is something that is ‘done’ to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotizes their problem away, as if by magic. But Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it’s important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.
Next we get you nice and relaxed. Using metaphor and language patterns we create a positive and relaxing experience we call trance. In this state of trance your subconscious mind becomes more receptive to beneficial suggestions, accepting directions to promote positive change. Brain waves change during this process, so we become more focused, relaxed and able to make decisions easier.
Trance is a completely natural state. We all go into trance many times a day. It may be when you are driving to a well know destination, such as home from work. You safely arrive at your destination but you can not remember all of the movements it took to get you there, or maybe even the route you took. Or maybe you get lost in a good book or TV programme and you lose track of time?
Its important to recognise that although you are deeply relaxed, you are not asleep and you are fully in control and you can open your eyes and sit up whenever you wish.
Sessions usually finish with a sense of calm and relaxation. Clients often talk about feeling ‘lighter’ and ‘relaxed’ and often report that they have a great nights sleep following a session.
