Anxiety and Stress

It’s quite normal for people to experience ‘safe levels’ of stress and anxiety from time to time in their lives, for example when doing a test or delivering a speech.

However, when people worry or feel stressed and behave in an excessively fearful or uneasy way, chronic levels of stress are created that can result in a state of increased anxiety. When this becomes too much for us to cope with, the quality of our lives can be significantly compromised and the enjoyment sapped away. We begin to feel that we are existing in a fog rather than living life to the full.

Prolonged anxiety can lead to other symptoms such as sleep disturbance, panic attacks, a feeling of losing control or being ‘detached’, OCD, phobias, social anxiety disorder, IBS and dermatitis.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a gentle approach to solve the problem. Step by step, it will refocus your mind enabling you to move away from the negative aspects of your life to the positive ones. During the sessions we will work to gradually stop the subconscious negative patterns that have been created and start to give you back control of your thoughts, reducing stress and anxiety and restoring peace, calmness and confidence.


Depression is taking a startling toll on modern day society. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in Britain will experience a mental disorder in a one year period. It is quite different from feeling unhappy or just ‘down’ and can have devastating negative effects in areas of work or relationships. Depression causes people to feel sad and deflated for prolonged periods of time.

Often people who suffer from depression have very low self esteem, little or no confidence, lack motivation and have difficulty in social situations. Appetite and sleep patterns can also be affected.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can work as a more natural and complementary route to overcoming depression, even if you are taking medication (NB Any changes to your medication routine should be carried out in discussion with your G.P and/or Mental Health Team.)

The sessions aim to stop the depression from becoming worse. Focusing on where you want to be rather than where you don’t want to be, you can begin to take small positive steps in turning the situation around. Do you have persistent difficulties in getting to sleep? Do you suffer from disturbed sleep patterns, lack of sleep or repeatedly find yourself waking in the middle of the night, awake for hours going over problems? If so, you will be aware of the debilitating effects insomnia can have on our work, relationships and personal lives. Insomnia can leave us feeling us feeling demotivated, irritable and sapped of all mental and physical energy. Daily activities can be a struggle. Continual lack of sleep can even lead to feelings of anger, frustration, exhaustion or tearfulness – does this sound familiar?

Insomnia affects around 1 in 3 people in the UK. There are a number of issues that can lead to insomnia such as lifestyle, physical health conditions or the environment in which you sleep.

Anger Management

Anger is a useful emotion and a normal reaction in instances where there is danger or a perceived threat to our lives e.g. feeling insulted or frustrated. It triggers a physical response in our bodies that is known as ‘fight or flight’. A surge of adrenaline is pumped around our bodies, preparing us to flee or fight the situation. However, these reactions aren’t appropriate for everyday situations.

For many, this natural reaction passes quickly but for some the feeling of anger can develop into a more persistent feature in their lives and become more difficult to control which can lead to both physical and mental problems such as high blood pressure, stomach problems, depression and anxiety. It can also affect relationships, work, confidence and self esteem.

If you find yourself feeling angry on a constant basis and unable to express yourself or regularly arguing with those close to you, perhaps even worried of the consequences of your anger, then Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may be the answer.

During the initial consultation I will explain in simple terms how the brain works in relation to anger and triggers that lead to anger. You will be asked to identify your preferred future and the goals you would like to achieve. The sessions include very deep relaxation using gentle music and guided imagery which is reinforced with the use of a complimentary CD that you will need to listen to in between sessions


Obsessive Compulsive Disorders are serious anxiety based conditions where the person experiencing the OCD’s has obsessive thoughts followed by repetitive compulsions or urges. These intrusive and repetitive unwanted thoughts, doubts and behaviours can have a significant, negative impact on the sufferer’s daily life and activities.

People with OCD are aware that the thoughts are irrational, but are driven to carry out the compulsive behaviours and rituals as they believe this will relieve them of the anxiety that is causing the unwanted thoughts.

Fear and Phobias

Fears are defined as a natural rational response to a real or perceived threat. Most of us will experience fear at some point in our lives. Phobias are irrational fears or aversions to an object, event or situation and can have a debilitating effect on the person’s life, preventing them from doing the things they enjoy. The sufferer often experiences a continual heightened sense of fear and anxiety to such an extent that it disrupts their ability to function and their quality of life. When someone has a phobia they will go to excessive lengths to avoid coming into contact with the object or situation that causes the phobia.

Simple phobias can include a fear of flying, the dentist, spiders, needles or heights. The good news is most simple phobias can be alleviated within 3 – 4 weekly sessions.

Complex phobias such as claustrophobia or agoraphobia can also be helped with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. During the initial consultation, we will discuss your needs and the best treatment for you.

Weight Management

Have you tried every diet in the book, found they have worked initially but then the weight crept back on or even exceeded your original weight?

Trying to lose weight can feel like a long and difficult road that sometimes leads to frustration, low self esteem and confidence.

Most of us overeat out of formed habits or emotional reasons such as when we are stressed, bored or even feeling down, therefore eating to satisfy our minds rather than feeling hungry. If you suffer from an eating disorder such as Bulimia or Anorexia, then our needs are often more complex, however, these can be addressed and helped using hypnotherapy.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind enabling you to take control, change old negative eating habits and create a new positive relationship with food.

Smoking Cessation

All you need to bring to this single session solution is your desire and motivation to stop smoking. It is important that the decision to stop smoking is yours and that you are not feeling pressure or persuasion from a family member or friend.

It can be very difficult to stop smoking by willpower alone. However when we combine willpower with hypnotherapy, the process can be simple with immediate and positive effects.

Hypnotherapy works on a subconscious level by changing the mind’s dependency on cigarettes. The trance is deeply relaxing and allows the changes to be accepted rather than resisted. It is very powerful, effective and gives you back control over this habit.

Pain Management

We have all experienced pain at some point in our lives. Pain is vital life saving function as it alerts us to a threat to the body that we can then act upon.
There are 2 main types of pain, acute and chronic.
Acute pain refers to short term pain, for example a migraine or a broken bone. If you have a broken bone acute pain alerts you the you need to rest the bone so that it can heal.
Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks or pain that lasts longer than the expected period of healing, or secondary to illness. This may be arthritis or example. This ongoing pain can result in muscle tension, limited mobility and a lack of energy.
Anger, sadness and depression increase our experience of pain. Feeling calm, happy, positive and confident decreases pain.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help in the management of pain. By using hypnosis, deep relaxation becomes the focus and perceptions of pain messages can be changed – helping to reduce the intensity of pain and sensations.
